Breakwaters & coastal structures

- a special fascination

Kystbeskyttelse og Kystsikring

Breakwater inspection in the southern hemisphere in the Indian Ocean, COWI 2019.

Since being a very young research engineer at DHI, I got a very special and dedicated interest in breakwaters and coastal structures; and especially the very largest breakwaters including those with large monolayer concrete armour units. This has led to work on many port and breakwater projects all over the world, including on some of the largest and most prestigious projects. The projects included new projects, but also over the years with DHI and COWI as an independent expert in connection with major damage and failures to structures designed by others.

Further, when at DHI I got involved in a number of challenging marine and breakwater projects, and pure research projects, where the results of the studies have been published in conference papers and a few peer review publications. If of interest see the link to many of those publications on researchgate.net under the previous page “publications”.

The stay in Bangladesh (1991-93) for DHI, especially the Brahmaputra River Training Study (FAP 1. Halcrowc/DHI) and my general knowledge and experience in hydraulics resulted in a special interest in river hydraulics and studies and design of river training structures

After 10 years at DHI, I wrote a book about all this experience gained by me and my colleagues, and DHI published in Nov. 1984 the book “A monograph on Rubble Mound Breakwaters”. The publication was financed by Knud Højgaards Foundation. There is a link to the full text under “publications”

Let us collaborate on climate adaptation and coastal engineering projects

The home page has been initiated in order to better get into contact with others that are facing these problems, or that have a special interest in these subjects. Thereby, we may have fruitful dialog for enhancing the knowledge that is so very important for the future climate adaptation of towns and coastal areas in Denmark and abroad.

Contact me to see whether there is a basis for cooperation about solving coastal engineering problems, or for a dialog about this very interesting subject, that I, always and still, personally take much interest in.
